2025 is the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation. And when the University of Ottawa's Laboratory for Cryospheric Research team approached us to help highlight
Girls on Ice Canada - an organization whose programs interweave science, art and adventure to inspire leadership, curiosity and confidence in the next generation of leaders through expeditions to glaciers located in Canada - through a series of three flavour collaborations in June, July and August, we said yes - we can do cold and frozen!
All joking aside, this is a small measure to be a part of something much bigger - the work to support
global awareness about the critical role of glaciers, snow and ice on our planet Earth.
Kaskawulsh Crunch was created as the first of three collaborations made during the summer of this glacier year. The University of Ottawa glacier research team chose Kaskawulsh Glacier, located in Yukon's Kluane National Park, as the first glacier to highlight and so Kaskawulsh Crunch was born - an ice cream made with fresh mint and our special "rocky" combination rice and grape-nut crunch! Why the rocky crunch? Well, glaciers are kinda crunchy in their own huuuge way - filled with lots of rocks small and large.
Here's to the work of glacier researchers and the data they collect to help governments, local populations and other organizations work on the policies and actions to preserve glaciers in Canada and around the world.
